Volunteers Needed!

Nonprofits large and small are essential to the community and always need help. Donating a few hours (or more) a month can make a difference to the organization and your well-being. Not only does the nonprofit benefit, but as a volunteer, you will find a rewarding experience unlike anything else.  

The truth is, that nonprofits have tight budgets that rely on community support, grants, fundraising, and volunteer time. There are always unmet needs and growth opportunities as the organization expands its reach – and this is where passionate people like you come in. 

Depending on the nonprofit, you may find that the team is trying to manage a big cause with a skeleton crew and depends heavily on volunteers to help carry out the organization’s good work. This could look like help posting on social media, prepping for events prep, community outreach, or even systems to coordinate their volunteers. No task is too small when it comes to volunteering.

Nonprofits are aware of the contributions their volunteers make. They should prioritize ways to celebrate and recognize their volunteers and ensure their donors and community know who’s on the ground.

A successful nonprofit is a well-oiled machine with a large team behind it, from a Board of Directors to a staff to a passionate group of volunteers. Together, these groups work hand in hand to create a vibrant experience for those who interact with their services in the community. 

 

How to Get Involved

If you are like most people, you probably have passions and interests beyond your “day job” and usual responsibilities. One of the best ways to tap into your passion is by volunteering. 

Every town, large or small, has nonprofits making it easy to find a way to help. 

First, zero in on how you would like to make a difference in your community. Think about causes dear to your heart. Some ideas: 

• • Fighting hunger (Meals on Wheels, your local food bank) 
  • Animal welfare (Your local humane society) 
  • Education and working with children (School, afterschool programs, sports) 
  • Environmental causes 

 

Then, consider your skill set: 

• • Are you great at fundraising? 
  • How about social media? 
  • Do you like planning events? 
  • Do you enjoy hands-on work with the elderly, children, or animals?  

 

Once you know what area you want to focus on and how you want to help, you can officially begin your search for nonprofits in your area. You can talk to colleagues, friends, and family to see where they share their time or you can try online searches that will help you identify the need in your area.

During this volunteer month, we encourage you to pause and think about how you can help somewhere. Remember, what may seem like a small investment of time on your part can make a monumental difference to those in need.
